Tutzing in Gdańsk

Blog: German students from Tutzing in Gdańsk: 22-29 October 2023 (German text by Luisa-Marleen Gerum)

SONNTAG / SUNDAY (Oct 22):

Um 7 Uhr am 22. Oktober ging die Reise am Tutzinger Bahnhof los und wir sind mit der Regionalbahn nach München zum Hauptbahnhof gefahren. Von dort ging es mit dem ICE nach Berlin, wo wir in den IC nach Danzig umgestiegen sind. Nach über sechs Stunden Fahrt durch Polen sind wir in Danzig angekommen und wurden von unseren Gastfamilien in Empfang genommen. Den Abend haben wir mit unseren Gastgebern verbracht und einen ersten Einblick in die polnische Kultur bekommen.

We started our journey in Tutzing at 7 a.m. A long ride on three different trains lay ahead of us, but we were all joyfully looking forward to this week's events. In the evening, we finally arrived in Gdańsk, where our host families were waiting for us. We spent the first evening together with our host families, who made it easy for us to feel at home there and get a first insight into Polish culture.

MONTAG / MONDAY (Oct 23):

Vormittags wurden wir in der Schule begrüßt, haben unsere Reisegruppe sowie unser Land vorgestellt und uns bei Icebreaking Games kennengelernt. Neben uns vom Gymnasium Tutzing waren Schüler*innen aus Norwegen, Rumänien und Spanien nach Danzig gereist, sodass wir die Möglichkeit hatten Jugendliche aus ganz Europa zu treffen.

Nachdem wir einen traditionellen polnischen Volkstanz gelernt hatten, gab es polnische Spezialitäten zum Mittagessen.

Den Nachmittag haben wir in der Altstadt verbracht, wo wir bei einer Stadtrallye einige von Danzigs Sehenswürdigkeiten besuchten. 

We were given a warm welcome at school before we introduced ourselves as well as our country and got to know each other playing games. Apart from our Polish hosts and us, there were also students from Norway, Romania and Spain, so we had the chance to get to know young people from all over Europe, which was truly interesting.

After learning a traditional Polish folk dance together, we had some local specialties for lunch.

After that we headed off to the town centre for an interactive tour to learn more about Gdańsk. We saw many of the marvelous sights of the city.

DIENSTAG / TUESDAY (Oct 24):

Der Tag begann mit einer Busfahrt auf die Halbinsel Hel. Dort haben wir bei einer Seerobbenfütterung zugeschaut und danach einen Workshop zum Thema Plastik im Meer besucht. Mittag gegessen haben wir in einem Restaurant und am Nachmittag einen Strandspaziergang gemacht. 

Our second day started with a bus trip to the Hel peninsula, where we watched some sea lions being fed and learned more about the local wildlife. To raise awareness of the problem of plastic in the ocean, we had a workshop there together. After lunch in a restaurant we strolled along the beautiful beach.

MITTWOCH / WEDNESDAY (Oct 25):

Wir haben den Vormittag in der Schule verbracht und ein Stationen-Spiel gemacht, bei dem wir uns alle besser kennengelernt haben. Danach ging es in das europäische Zentrum für Solidarität und wir haben vieles über Polens Geschichte zur Zeit des Kommunismus gelernt. Dabei haben wir Einblicke in das Leben in Polen zu dieser Zeit gewonnen, die wir zuhause im Geschichts Unterricht nie bekommen hätten. Mittags haben wir in einer der vielen Foodhalls von Danzig ukrainische Gerichte probiert und in der Freizeit am Nachmittag waren wir in Gruppen in der Stadt unterwegs. Dadurch hatten wir die Gelegenheit Freundschaften zu schließen und mehr über das Leben in Norwegen, Polen und Spanien zu erfahren. Am Abend hatten wir viel Spaß bei Lasertag.

We spent the morning at school playing some more games to really get to know each other, which was very helpful. After that we visited the Solidarność museum, where we learned a lot of things we didn't know about Polish history during communism. It was interesting and sometimes shocking to learn about life in Poland at that time - something we wouldn't have learned at school in our history lessons.

For lunch we went to the adjacent food halls, where we tried some Ukrainian dishes, and after that we had some time for ourselves, so we explored the city in small groups together with teenagers from the other countries and our host country. This way we had some real cultural exchange with our Polish, Norwegian, Romanian and Spanish mates, and actually made a lot of new friends. The evening event, laser tag, was lots of fun too!

DONNERSTAG / THURSDAY (Oct 26):

Am Morgen ging es wieder mit einer Busfahrt los, dieses Mal in Richtung Süden nach Szymbark. Dort angekommen wurden wir durch ein Museum, das so einiges zu bieten hatte geführt. Dort waren unteranderem der größte an einem Stück gefällte Baum Polens, ein riesen Klavier und ein Nachbau eines Zuges nach Sibirien in ein sovjetisches Arbeitslager ausgestellt. Zudem haben wir eine Kriegs-Bunkersimulation und ein upside down Haus besichtigt. Nach dem Mittagessen, das aus Stockbrot und polnischcen Würstchen am Lagerfeuer bestand, haben wir einen Waldspaziergang gemacht.

Zurück in Danzig sind wir Jugendliche in das Einkaufszentrum Forum gegangen um gemeinsam Abend zu essen und zu shoppen.

The morning started with another bus trip, this time to Szymbark in the south. The local museum there had a lot of interesting and fascinating things to offer: Poland's biggest tree ever cut down in one piece, a huge piano, a train to Siberia and a Soviet work camp. In addition, we played a bunker simulation game and visited a house that was constructed upside down.

After lunch (campfire twist bread and Polish sausages), we went for a walk through the forest.

Back in Gdańsk we had some free time to get dinner and go shopping together with the other teens. 

FREITAG / FRIDAY (Oct 27):

Am Freitag, unserem letzten gemeinsamen Tag, war die Stimmung etwas gedrückt, da wir alle in den letzten Tagen eine einzigartige Zeit und so viele schöne Erinnerungen miteinander gemacht hatten, jedoch schon wieder Abschied nehmen mussten. Den Vormittag verbrachten wir in der Schule, wo wir unsere Zertifikate erhielten und ein Abschluss Kahoot spielten. Das Mittagessen fand in einer Foodhall statt und in der Freizeit danach haben wir versucht so viel schöne Zeit wie möglich miteinander zu verbringen. Als es abends Zeit war uns zu verabschieden, floss nicht nur eine Träne.

On Friday, you could really feel the atmosphere was somewhat dim because it was our last day together. We had all had a wonderful time together these past days and collected precious memories, so everybody was sad to have to leave soon again.

We spent the last morning at school to get our certificates and play a fun kahoot quiz game together.

We had lunch in a food hall again and tried to spend as much time together with the students from the other countries in our free time after that. When time had come to say goodbye in the evening, tears were actually shed (and not just one!).

SONNTAG / SUNDAY (Oct 29):

Die Zugfahrt zurück nach Deutschland traten wir zwar etwas traurig an, die vielen einzigartigen Erinnerungen, die wir im Gepäck hatten glichen das allerdings wieder aus. Eine 12-stündige Zugfahrt später nahmen unser Familien uns in Tutzing in Empfang.

Ich werde die Zeit in Danzig nie vergessen und bin sehr dankbar, die Möglichkeit bekommen zu haben, so viele tolle neue Freunde aus ganz Europa zu finden und mit ihnen diese Woche zu verbringen.

During the twelve-hour train ride back to Germany, we were still quite sad to leave our friends, but the many great memories we took from there compensated for that. And we had something to tell to our families, who were waiting for us at the train station in Tutzing.

I will never forget this great time we had in Gdańsk and I'm really grateful to have been given this opportunity to meet so many awesome people from all over Europe and spend this week with them!
